You can also make your stay in Karaikal (the capital of thirunallar) which is a bigger town than Thirunallar. It has lot more hotels. Karaikal is at a distance of around 6 km from Thirunallar. Lots of buses are running between Thirunllar (at least through Thirunallar) and Karaikal. So you need not worry about transport facilities between Thirunallar and Karaikal.

Travel Desk | Bus or Train to Thirunallar (Karaikal)

By Flight:
Airports near Thirunallar:
The nearest airport is at Trichy (Thiruchirapalli) which is around 140 km away from Thirunallar (4:00 hours by bus. 3:30 hours by Taxi). If you ask me for the next nearest airport, then I would say "Chennai". Though there are other airports, the connectivity between Chennai and Thirunallar is very high. If you cannot reach Trichy, then you had better reach Chennai and then from there you can either come by bus (7:30 hours) or Taxi (6 Hours). Bus details are given below in this blog.

By Train:
You can reach any one of the nearest railway stations listed below and then reach Thirunallar by auto or taxi or bus. Some of the nearest railway stations to Thirunallar are:

On your own vehicle (or) by bus:
Please note that Karaikal (6km from Thirunallar) is the main town. So most of the buses will be available only till Karaikal. If your bus does not pass through Thirunallar, then book your tickets to Karaikal and then from there you can take an auto-rickshaw or bus to Thirunallar.

A lot of government buses like "SETC", "PRTC" originating from various major cities/towns are passing through Karaikal and/or Thirunallar. Natives of Pondicherry always prefer PRTC (Pudhucherry Road Transport Corporation) buses as they reach the defined destinations sooner than any other bus service. About Thirunallar

Thirunallar is one of the most famous holy places in South India located in Karaikal which is 160 km south of Pondicherry (Pudhucherry). Thirunallar is famous for Lord Saneeshwara's (Saturn) temple. The only temple where Lord Saneeshwara lost all his power to Lord Shiva (Dharbaranyeshwarar) which saved his devotee Nalan from Saturn's curses. That's the story about the temple. A lot of People visit the place every Saturday to get similar blessings.

"Nala Theertham", we people call it as "Nalangulam", the sacred tank (holy pond), is where pilgrims cleanse their curses and sins. It is located at a walkable distance from the main temple. The "Golden Crow" and "Maragadha Lingam (made of emerald)" are also famous here.

It is a very small place with its town area measuring less than a square kilo meter. As a result, you can see that the main place is totally being crowded on Saturdays. You can find full of tourist buses all around the temple.

Since it is a Saturn temple, all Saturdays are always special. Special pooja's are made on Saturdays. I suggest the pilgrims to make a visit on non-saturdays if at all possible (if at all you can) to have luxurious dharshan avoiding crowds.

By the way, the same friend of mine said for needy people, he can arrange for the Special Entry for Saturdays as not everyone can get those passes. Please note, he is NOT a guide!!! He will only get you the special entry and WILL NOT and CANNOT ASSIST any further. He said he can arrange the entry only if informed on or before the Thursday.
